Kaitiaki Adventures Mt Tarawera Half Day Tour

Mt Tarawera - Kaitiaki

Kaitiaki Adventures is proud to announce the September 1 2014 launch of the exclusive land based tours to Mt Tarawera, an iconic cultural, historical and natural landmark within the Rotorua Region.

Mt Tarawera Half Day Volcanic Tours will be departing twice daily from Rotorua and will include expert guided walks around the summit and crater of Mt Tarawera, encompassing some of New Zealand’s most stunning natural vistas, blended with the cultural and geological history of the mountain, the landscape and the people that lived near this amazing landmark.

Tours will aim to strike a balance between environmental respect and old fashioned manaakitanga.

Kaitiaki Adventures has been working with the local hapu – Ngati Rangitihi, to facilitate educational experiences for school and university students and are excited to be extending this unique opportunity to the tourism sector. Long revered as a culturally significant Maunga (Mountain)  to Te Arawa Iwi, Mt Tarawera claims a unique place in New Zealand history through its eruption on June 10th, 1886, destroying the famous Pink and White Terraces, thought to be the eight natural wonder of the world, as well as burying the village of Te Wairoa, as well as many unmarked Maori Villages  in and around Lake Tarawera.

This area was the first site for major international tourism in New Zealand and Kaitiaki Adventures feel a responsibility to ensure that the legacy of the original tourism pioneers in this area is preserved and respected by new visitors to the Maunga.

Kaitiaki will continue to work with Ngati Rangitihi to ensure that each tour respects the Wairua (Spirit) and Mana of the Tangata Whenua and their Tupuna (Ancestors).
